On August 20XX, a gate suddenly appears in Tokyo's Ginza district, unleashing a portal where monsters, medieval knights and other fantasy beings come from another world and wreak havoc on Tokyo. The Japanese Defense Force take action against these monsters and push them back into the "Gate". Third Reconnaissance Team is dispatched to the "Special Region" lead by officer (and otaku) Youji Itami. On their travels, they are joined by a beautiful elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon's rampage and guide the group across the dangerous new world. Source: Crunchyroll
I really like the concept of having our modern day civilization interact with the fairy tale world we grew up with. The show takes a more realistic approach (if you can call it that) to how we’d try to benefit from the resources another world would have to offer.
Our main protagonist, a second lieutenant for a Self-Defense force, is asked to explore this unknown world by his government and on his journey he befriends a bunch of fairy tale being.
We’re introduced to an elf with PTSD, a loli axe wielding reaper and a expressionless mage who becomes the translator for the Self-Defense force.
The first season of the show focuses on world building but they change the direction of the second season with a more political approach. I feel the show could have done a lot more in exploring this unknown world.
A good place to start my (fantasy-)anime journey, not the best but also not the worst show out there but definitely one that thinks a little outside the standard box.
